The Copenhagen Dragon Boat Cultural Festival has pioneered several European firsts:
It has been held consecutively for 7 years without interruption, even during the pandemic.
The top figure of Copenhagen, the Lord Mayor, attended the opening ceremony and gave a speech. In 2022, the Mayor of Integration participated and spoke, and in 2023, due to the Lord Mayor being away, he left a video speech for our event.
The festival is also the largest in Europe, with over 50,000 attendees, more than 1,000 participants, over 100 volunteers, 35 racing teams, 65 booths, and sponsorship from over 60 organizations, companies, and individuals from local areas, China, Austria, the Czech Republic, Norway, Finland, and Sweden. The peak period lasted for 5 hours.
A free dragon boat training and trial rowing public day was held for one day. On June 22, there was a dragon boat training and trial rowing public day, and the main event of the dragon boat festival was on the 23rd.
The professional champion team was the Guangdong Zhongtang Dragon Boat Team from the dragon boat hometown in China, and the professional runner-up, the Danish Fuhu Dragon Boat Team captain, had participated in the China International Dragon Boat Competition and won the championship.
Danish singer Ray Ray performed his original song "Colorful Dragon." Three Danish female singers who had performed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics also gave a wonderful performance. The Director of Shenzhen Culture and Tourism Bureau brought top-level Chinese tea art performances.
The Copenhagen Dragon Boat Cultural Festival has become a grand event for dragon boats, food, tea culture, branded goods, and Chinese-Danish cultural performances. It is also a midsummer festival event.
Since 2022, we have promoted Chinese cities through the dragon boat festival. In 2019, it was Liuzhou, Guangxi, promoting snail rice noodles; in 2023, it was Longyou, Zhejiang, Hechi, Guangxi, and Putuo, Shanghai, promoting the culture of these places. In 2024, we will focus on promoting Hong Kong-Shenzhen-Dongguan and the national liquor "Dream of the Blue" to Northern Europe, and popularizing Chinese tea culture in Northern Europe.
Since 2020, we have set themes for the dragon boat race: in 2020, "Cheer for China, Cheer for Wuhan, Cheer for Europe"; in 2021, "Together in the Same Boat, Fighting the Pandemic Together"; in 2022, "You and Me, One Global Village"; in 2023, "Let the World Be Filled with Love" with the author and original singer Guo Feng performing on-site. In 2024, the Year of the Dragon, the theme will be dragons, with Danish singer Ray Ray performing his original song "Colorful Dragon."
Due to swans laying eggs at the race venue every year, to protect wildlife and not disturb the swan’s nesting, we decided to hold the Dragon Boat Cultural Festival on the second to last weekend of June each year, coinciding with the midsummer festival. The presence of swans has brought joy and interesting stories to the festival.
